College of Science & Engineering

My teaching and research are focussed, mainly, on educational theory and philosophy.  My work is particularly driven by issues of social justice with respect, for example, to internationalization, inclusion and gender and to the role of affect and emotions in learning, teaching and university life. Deploying philosophy as research, I frequently draw on the Capabilities Approach and my current projects are focussed on academic labour in the neoliberal academy with recent work on peer review, academic friendship, and values in Higher Education.  Hence I bring to VisNET a concern to improve equity in the academy, particularly for women whose careers continue, all too frequently, to be disadvantaged by their gender.  I believe that by putting theory into practice, and combining empirical and conceptual interrogation of the academy today, the VisNET project can make an essential contribution to reclaiming voice, power and flourishing for women in STEM in our universities. In VisNET, I have responsibility for conceptual analysis and am privileged to lead one of the peer mentoring groups.
